Open Letter to Members of Council re: Southside Housing Projects
January 23, 2025
Lethbridge City Council
City Hall 910 4 Avenue South
Lethbridge, AB T1J 0P6
Dear Members of the Lethbridge City Council,
On behalf of the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, I extend our sincere thanks for your recent approval of the second and third readings of several Land Use Amendment Bylaws and Area Redevelopment Plan Amendments for four proposed housing projects on the city’s southside. Your leadership in addressing the critical issue of housing availability and affordability is commendable and aligns with the needs of our growing community.
We also acknowledge and appreciate your recognition that these developments will bring adjustments to the existing communities where they are being built. As a Chamber, we share these concerns and understand the importance of balancing change with community interests. However, we firmly believe that the long-term benefits of these projects will be felt and appreciated by the community upon their completion.
Housing affordability is a cornerstone of economic growth and community sustainability. As highlighted in our policy paper, A Pathway to Fixing Housing Affordability Crisis in Alberta, the lack of adequate, accessible, and affordable rental housing disproportionately affects low-to-moderate income earners, creating financial and psychological stress that impedes their ability to thrive. By supporting these developments, you are contributing to a solution that not only provides immediate relief but also fosters long-term social and economic benefits for Lethbridge.
We have heard from businesses that the need for housing for moderate income earners is essential for the future success of their employees and plays a critical role in retention within our city.
The Chamber is acutely aware of the housing crisis facing our province and our city. Alberta’s population has grown substantially, yet the pace of housing development has not kept up with demand, resulting in rising rental and homeownership costs. By approving these projects, you are addressing a critical gap in our community and paving the way for more comprehensive, affordable, and prosperous neighborhoods.
Investments in housing have far-reaching impacts. For every residential unit developed, an estimated two to two-and-a-half new jobs are created, primarily local. These projects will not only provide much-needed housing but also stimulate our local economy, create jobs, and support businesses across the city. Furthermore, access to quality, affordable housing reduces household stress, improves health outcomes, and supports educational achievement, ultimately fostering a healthier and more productive workforce.
We recognize the challenges inherent in balancing community interests and addressing the “not in my backyard” sentiment that can slow development. Your actions demonstrate a commitment to overcoming these challenges through thoughtful policy and decisive leadership.
The Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce is a proponent of innovative solutions to address the housing supply and affordability crisis. We advocate for strategies that include:
- Collaborating with all levels of government to align efforts and create cohesive housing policies.
- Providing funding and incentives for developers and service providers to address housing needs.
- Exploring creative land use strategies to increase housing density and affordability.
By continuing to support housing initiatives and fostering collaboration between stakeholders, we can ensure that Lethbridge remains a welcoming and sustainable community for current and future residents. The Chamber is committed to working alongside the City Council, City Administration and other partners to advance these goals and to champion policies that enhance the quality of life for all citizens.
Thank you once again for your dedication to addressing this vital issue. We look forward to seeing these projects come to fruition and to the positive impacts they will have on our community.
Sincerely,
Cyndi Crane, MEd
